Opening the ark and taking out the Torah Scrolls is considered very meritorious and traditionally among the highest honors available on Yom Kippur. Standing in front of the open ark during the Kol Nidrei Prayer on Yom Kippur symbolically opens the Gates of Heaven, allowing prayers to be heard and inviting blessings.
